Eskom CFO Calib Cassim to Retire After 24 Years at South African Power Utility

South Africa’s state-owned power utility Eskom has announced that its Group Chief Financial Officer, Calib Cassim, will retire after 24 years at the company, marking the coming departure of one of the executives involved in its recent operational and financial recovery.

According to Reuters, Cassim will retire during Eskom’s financial year ending in March 2027, with the utility planning to appoint his replacement before the end of the 2026 calendar year.

Cassim has held several senior responsibilities during his time at Eskom and also spent a year serving as acting Group Chief Executive. The company credited him with playing an important role in its operational turnaround and return to profitability.

His planned departure comes as Eskom works to maintain improvements after years of operational and financial difficulties that affected electricity supply in South Africa.

Cassim told Reuters that he was confident the progress made by Eskom’s current leadership team would continue under his eventual successor.

“I will take a rest and watch Eskom succeed,” Cassim said.

The announcement gives Eskom several months to manage the leadership transition before Cassim leaves the company. The utility said it aims to have his replacement appointed before the end of the year.

Cassim’s long tenure has also placed him at the centre of different periods in Eskom’s development. His time as acting Group Chief Executive added broader leadership responsibility to his financial role before he returned to his position as Group Chief Financial Officer.

His retirement now comes with Eskom in a stronger position than during some of its most difficult recent years, with the company highlighting both its operational recovery and return to profitability.

What This Means For Africa

Eskom’s leadership transition matters beyond South Africa because the utility operates at the centre of the continent’s most industrialised economy and plays an important role in the wider Southern African electricity market.

Cassim’s departure will therefore place attention on who succeeds him and whether Eskom can maintain the financial and operational progress achieved under its current leadership.

For the company, appointing a new chief financial officer before Cassim formally retires would provide time for a smoother transition as Eskom continues its recovery.

The next phase will test whether the improvements Cassim helped oversee can become sustainable beyond the tenure of the executives who played key roles in delivering them.
