For nearly two decades, global media icon and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey has invested in the dreams of young South African women through education. Now, the celebrated entrepreneur is ushering in a new chapter of that commitment, one designed to reach even more students across the country.
According to Business Insider Africa, Oprah has announced plans to transition the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls from its current residential school model into a nationwide scholarship programme by the end of 2027.

Rather than limiting support to one institution, the new scholarship programme will enable talented young women from different communities to pursue their education at leading schools throughout South Africa, extending the impact of a mission that began more than 20 years ago.
Speaking about the transition, Oprah explained that her vision had always extended beyond establishing a single school.
She added that the next phase of the initiative would allow the programme to reach even more girls while remaining true to its founding purpose of creating life-changing educational opportunities.
Since opening its doors in 2007, the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls has become one of South Africa’s most recognised educational institutions, nurturing academically talented girls from underserved communities while placing equal emphasis on leadership, confidence, compassion, and personal development.
The academy’s impact has been widely recognised over the years. Independent findings released in 2024 showed that almost all graduates continued into higher education, while many credited the institution with opening doors that would otherwise have remained beyond their reach. Today, former students are making meaningful contributions across diverse professions, including medicine, engineering, education, business, science, the arts, and public service.
As part of the transition, the school’s property will be returned to the Gauteng Department of Education in line with the original partnership agreement, ensuring the facilities continue serving future generations of learners.
Importantly, students currently enrolled at the academy will continue receiving full academic, financial, and personal support until they complete their education. Alumni will also remain connected through mentorship opportunities, leadership programmes, and higher education support, preserving the strong community that has grown around the institution over the years.
For Oprah Winfrey, the transition represents not an ending, but the evolution of a vision that has always centred on empowering young women through education. By broadening access to scholarships across South Africa, she continues to reinforce a legacy built on opportunity, leadership, and lasting social impact.
