South African fashion designer and businessman Laduma Ngxokolo is the founder of MaXhosa Africa, a luxury fashion brand recognized for translating traditional Xhosa aesthetics into contemporary knitwear, textiles, and lifestyle products.

Born in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, South Africa, Ngxokolo grew up immersed in Xhosa culture, an influence that would later become the foundation of his design philosophy. He attended Lawson Brown High School, where he formally studied art and began exploring textile design in 2003.
During this period, he started making scarves and beanies for fellow students after the passing of his mother, helping support himself while developing an early interest in fashion entrepreneurship.
His passion for textiles led him to Nelson Mandela University, where he earned a Bachelor of Technology degree in Textile Design and Technology in 2010. In 2016, he furthered his studies internationally after receiving a scholarship to Central Saint Martins in London, completing a master’s degree in Material Futures.
Ngxokolo’s professional journey began to gain international recognition in 2010 when his collection, The Colourful World of the Xhosa Culture, won the Society of Dyers and Colourists design competition in London.
The project explored how traditional Xhosa beadwork patterns, motifs, and colours could be reinterpreted for contemporary audiences, a concept that would later evolve into his fashion brand.
That same year, he officially launched MaXhosa, initially focusing on menswear inspired by traditional Xhosa dress and cultural symbolism. Over time, the company expanded into womenswear, home collections, accessories, and broader lifestyle offerings, growing into what is now known as MaXhosa Africa.
What distinguishes Laduma Ngxokolo is his ability to transform cultural heritage into a globally recognized luxury business.
At a time when authenticity and representation continue to shape conversations within the fashion industry, MaXhosa Africa has demonstrated that African narratives, craftsmanship, and traditions can resonate with audiences across international markets.
In 2019, Ngxokolo acquired a knitting factory in Johannesburg as part of efforts to strengthen local production capabilities and support manufacturing within South Africa’s textile sector.
The brand’s global presence has continued to grow through showcases at major fashion events, including New York Fashion Week and Paris Fashion Week. In 2024, MaXhosa Africa opened a flagship store in Manhattan and made its debut on the official Paris Fashion Week calendar, further expanding its international footprint.
His contributions have earned significant recognition over the years. Ngxokolo was named the Design Indaba Most Beautiful Object in South Africa winner in 2016 and was listed among the 100 Most Influential Africans by New African magazine in 2017. In 2021, he received the African Luxury Heritage Brand of the Year award in France.
His work has also evolved through collaborations with global brands, including Mercedes-Benz, reflecting the growing influence of African luxury design within international creative industries.
