Binance Executive Seeks Compensation for Unlawful Detention in Nigeria

A Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled a hearing for March 20, 2025, to address a compensation case filed by Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan against Nigeria’s National Security Adviser (NSA) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Gambaryan claims he was unfairly detained in Nigeria and is seeking compensation for the hardship he faced.

The detention occurred in February 2024, when Gambaryan and another Binance executive, Nadeem Anjarwalla, were held by Nigerian authorities during a meeting.

While Anjarwalla managed to escape, Gambaryan remained in custody for months, facing charges of tax evasion, money laundering, and forex violations alongside Binance.

Gambaryan’s lawyers argue that he was unjustly detained as a bargaining chip, and his health significantly deteriorated during his time in custody. In October 2024, a judge dropped the money laundering charges against him.

Gambaryan is now seeking compensation for the stress and hardship caused to him and his family, claiming his detention was unlawful.

The NSA and EFCC have countered, stating they acted within the law and requesting additional time to submit evidence. The judge has granted all parties time to finalize their filings before the next court session on March 20, 2025.
