Telecom operators in Nigeria are preparing to introduce new tariffs in March, following the approval of a 50% tariff hike by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
The hike, which was granted on January 20, 2025, is expected to commence in February, but the operators have stated that they will begin introducing the new tariffs in March.
According to the Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Gbenga Adebayo, the tariff adjustment is essential for the survival of the telecommunications sector.
Adebayo stressed that the sector cannot be used as a subsidy for other sectors, and that the cost of services should be reflective of the economy.
The Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have, however, called for a massive protest on February 4, to force a downward review of the 50% hike to about 5%.
The telecom operators have justified the hike, citing the need to adapt to rising economic pressures and ensure the sustainability of the industry.
The Director of Corporate Communications and CSR, Femi Adeniran, noted that the 50% hike would enable operators to invest more in the service, while the Director of Product Innovation and Business Development at 9mobile, Kenechukwu Okonkwo, stated that issues of tariffs were best left to market forces.
