China’s Huayou Starts First Lithium Processing Exports from Zimbabwe

China’s Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt has announced the first-ever export of lithium salt from Zimbabwe, marking a major milestone for Africa’s mineral processing ambitions.

According to Reuters, the shipment of lithium sulphate comes from Huayou’s $400 million processing plant, completed in October 2025, with an annual capacity of about 50,000 metric tons.

The development follows Zimbabwe’s recent policy push to halt exports of raw lithium concentrates and instead encourage local beneficiation to capture more economic value.

Authorities had earlier frozen concentrate exports in February 2026 over concerns about malpractice and are planning a full ban by January 2027, while allowing processed lithium products like sulphate to be exported.

Huayou described the shipment as the first lithium salt produced not only in Zimbabwe but across Africa, signaling a shift from raw material exports to in-country processing.

Zimbabwe, currently Africa’s top lithium producer, has been tightening regulations and introducing quotas to ensure compliance with financial, environmental, and safety standards in the sector.

What This Means For Africa

This signals that Africa is starting to move beyond exporting raw minerals toward processing and value creation locally. Zimbabwe’s approach shows how countries can capture more economic value from resources like lithium, especially in fast-growing sectors such as clean energy.

However, the outcome depends on strong execution. Without sustained investment, technical expertise, and clear policies, the shift could slow down. If done right, this could mark a turning point in how Africa participates in global supply chains.
