FG Denies Oyedele Admitted Errors In Tax Laws

The Federal Government has dismissed reports claiming that Nigeria’s Minister of State for Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, admitted errors in the country’s newly implemented tax laws, describing such reports as misleading and inaccurate.

1In a statement issued by the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, the government said the minister’s comments had been misrepresented. According to the committee, media reports suggesting that Oyedele acknowledged flaws and called for a legislative probe were false, noting that the legislative review process had already been concluded and the laws formally gazetted in January 2026.

The clarification followed remarks made by Oyedele during a fireside chat at a Nigerian Bar Association conference in Lagos, where he discussed the early impact of the tax reforms. The committee stated that his focus was on highlighting progress, not admitting errors.

Officials pointed to early outcomes from the reforms, including a significant rise in tax registration reportedly increasing from about 10 million to over 100 million Nigerians as well as a surge in informal businesses registering with the Corporate Affairs Commission

The government emphasized that the new tax laws were designed to simplify the tax system, reduce burdens on low-income earners, and exempt essential goods and small businesses from certain taxes.

While acknowledging that no legislation is perfect, the committee clarified that Oyedele only noted the need for continuous stakeholder engagement to refine the laws through future amendments—not that he admitted existing errors.

The FG urged the public to disregard what it described as sensational and distorted narratives and rely on verified official communication regarding the ongoing tax reforms. Punch Newspapers
