Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has declared that Nigeria’s next president in the 2027 general election should emerge from the southern region of the country.
Saraki made this position public during a televised political programme, where he also ruled out any intention of contesting the presidency himself.
According to him, the principle of zoning and regional balance should guide political parties ahead of the election, stressing that fairness demands that the South retains the presidency beyond 2023.

He argued that since Nigerians elected President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from the South in 2023, it is only equitable to allow the region complete an eight-year tenure before power rotates again.
Saraki stated clearly that his decision not to run in 2027 aligns with internal party deliberations on zoning, noting that he remains committed to upholding that agreement.

The former Senate President further emphasized that his stance is rooted in maintaining political stability and ensuring balanced representation across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones, a recurring issue in the country’s electoral politics.
His declaration adds to the growing political positioning ahead of the 2027 elections, where debates around zoning, party alignment, and regional power rotation are already intensifying.
