NAPTIP rescues 184 trafficking victims, secures convictions in Plateau

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons reported that it has rescued 184 victims of human trafficking in Plateau State and secured convictions against traffickers, actions carried out over roughly the last two months, culminating in a validation workshop for Local Action Plans held in Jos South, Mangu and Wase Local Government Areas at the Plateau State Secretariat in Jos.

The agency’s Acting Head of Counselling and Rehabilitation in Plateau, Anne Felix, said the victims were recovered during raids on various locations in Jos, and that the cohort included three pregnant women as well as teenagers and other minors.

Felix stated that five of those rescued remain in NAPTIP rehabilitation centres undergoing counselling and support, while the rest have been processed and assisted toward reintegration.

She also disclosed that in December of the preceding year, NAPTIP successfully prosecuted a number of traffickers in Plateau courts and that those convicted are currently serving prison sentences as a result of those convictions.

Survivors of trafficking have been provided with skills training and other forms of support intended to help them rebuild their lives following exploitation, according to the agency representative.
