Women in Law: A Trailblazer for Girls’ and Women’s Rights – Carolyn Seaman

Carolyn Seaman is a force to be reckoned with. As a lawyer, social entrepreneur, and filmmaker, she has dedicated her life to advocating for girls’ and women’s rights.

With over 25 years of experience, Carolyn has made a profound impact on the lives of millions of adolescent girls across West Africa.

At the heart of her work is the Girls Voices Initiative, a nonprofit she founded to educate and empower girls to amplify their voices, advocate for their rights, and leverage technology and digital media for social change.

Under her leadership, the organization has built a strong movement for gender equality, impacting over a million girls across West Africa.

Carolyn’s commitment to girls’ and women’s rights extends far beyond her work with the Girls Voices Initiative. She has represented West Africa in the African Union and Girls Not Brides campaigns to end child marriage, and co-chaired Nigeria’s National Coalition on the issue. Her tireless efforts have earned her recognition as a leading voice in the fight for gender equality.

As a tech and media leader, Carolyn has coordinated the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria Abuja Network and currently serves as President of the TechWomen Nigeria Alumni Association, driving women’s empowerment in technology.

Her organization, Girls Voices Initiative, has won numerous awards, including the 2019 With and For Girls Award for the Most Disruptive Girl-Led Nonprofit in Sub-Saharan Africa and the 2020 BPeace Women Forward Global Award Gold Winner for the Next Generation Workplace.

She is also the Founder and Festival Director of the largest women’s film festival in Africa, the Women’s International Film Festival Nigeria (WIFFEN).
