Economic freedom is an essential factor that directly impacts the daily lives of people around the world, shaping the jobs we get, the quality of goods we buy, the schools our children attend, and even the cleanliness of our environment.

According to the 2025 Index of Economic Freedom published by The Heritage Foundation, economic freedom is linked to stronger economies, better education systems, healthier environments, and higher standards of living.

The Index evaluates 184 countries annually, measuring how well they uphold principles such as free markets, the rule of law, secure property rights, and limited government.

While global economic conditions remain challenging, with inflation, geopolitical instability, and pandemic-era policies undermining long-term growth, Africa has some standout performers in economic freedom.

Mauritius, ranked 15th globally, leads the continent with an economic score of 75.0, thanks to a sound regulatory environment and strong governance.

Following Mauritius are Botswana with a score of 69.9, ranking 31st globally, and Cabo Verde, which scored 68.7, ranking 40th.

These countries have proven that economic reforms can lead to tangible progress, offering valuable lessons to others on the continent.

Other African nations that are making strides in economic freedom include Seychelles, ranked 52nd globally with a score of 66.4, and São Tomé and Príncipe, with a score of 60.4, securing the 85th spot.

Morocco, with a score of 60.3, ranks 86th globally, while Tanzania follows closely with a score of 59.3, placing 92nd in the global ranking.

Namibia, ranked 94th with a score of 58.7, and Benin, with a score of 58.5, sit just ahead of Côte d’Ivoire, which rounds out the top 10 African countries with a score of 57.8 and a global rank of 101st.

While these nations are facing many challenges, they are proving that by embracing free-market principles, they can pave the way for greater prosperity and improved living standards.
