Not everyone who changes the world starts off loving the tools that build it. In fact, Abel Dawha once disliked computers. Now, he’s not just fluent in Python, he has become a rising force in AI and Cybersecurity, turning his once-distant interest into a passion-fueled career.
From a background in Petroleum Engineering, Abel’s story is one of grit, self-discovery, and the courage to pivot when life demands it.
What began as a compulsory university course blossomed into a mission, a calling that led him to launch CFE Consultancy Services, a solution-driven company born from introspection and fueled by the belief that cybersecurity is for everyone.

In a world where tech is evolving faster than ever, Abel’s resilience, authenticity, and discipline, deeply rooted in his upbringing, have not only helped him navigate uncertainty but also empowered him to inspire others and give back through mentorship and thought leadership.
His journey speaks to every young African, every career switcher, and every dreamer who ever wondered, “Is it too late to start something new?”
In this interview, Abel Dawha shares his incredible story, from humble beginnings to industry recognition, and what keeps him going even in the face of doubt.
CA: Abel, your transition from Petroleum Engineering into AI and Cybersecurity is inspiring. Can you take us back to how it all began? What inspired you to build CFE Consultancy Services?
Abel: My journey actually started way back in 2021 while I was in university. That semester, I had to take a course on Python.
For someone who hated anything computer-related, it was shocking to see that I, a Petroleum Engineering student, would have to code!
But I took it seriously. I began with YouTube tutorials, joined discussions, read books, and did short practice bursts on PyCharm.
That was when I realized I needed to learn more about Python, beyond just using it for reservoir simulation.
Fast forward to 2023, I had finished school, and as usual, that realization hit me, “Omo, my degree might not be enough.” I knew I needed a skill.
I jumped from one tech field to another until I finally found one that piqued my interest just like Python once did, Cybersecurity. Along the way, I integrated AI into it, and it’s been a joyride ever since.
The inspiration to build CFE Consultancy Services came from a moment of self-reflection. I had already completed courses, done hands-on practice, and thought, “Now what? Should I look for a remote job or internship?” I had been applying, but as usual, no responses came.
I almost gave up on what I had spent over a year learning, until I realized, this is a much-needed, ever-evolving, and scarce field. Many organizations can’t afford full-time staff.
So I thought, why not provide services instead? That’s how CFE was born, from a simple yet powerful reflection. After all, Cybersecurity is for Everyone.
CA: That’s quite a turning point. Breaking into AI and cybersecurity is no small feat. What was your journey like, and were there any key mentors or role models who guided you along the way?
Abel: At first, it was a journey without much clarity. But as I kept taking steps, the vision got clearer.
The first push came from my mom, Mrs. Brenda Jack Dawha. She always emphasized the need to have an in-demand tech skill.
She hinted at the cybersecurity space and introduced me to Mr. Adeniyi Owonibi, the COO & Co-Founder of Convexity Technologies Limited.
Just a brief conversation with him opened my eyes to this rapidly growing tech field. He encouraged me to research and find what truly works for me.
Another person who pushed me forward with his words was Mr. Sola Bickersteth, Co-Founder and Group Managing Director of FIC Professionals Plc. I had a short internship with them, and that experience really opened my eyes. I value the time I spent with him and the entire FIC team.

CA: That’s inspiring. AI and cybersecurity are fast-evolving and competitive fields. What challenges have you faced in your journey, and how did you push through them?
Abel: Just like you said, fast-evolving and competitive! Especially with AI now being integrated into so many fields, it’s moving at an alarming pace. That means you have to catch up and skill up fast.
For me, adaptability has been the key. Once you have a clear vision of the future you want, no matter what happens, you just keep adapting and moving.
CA: It’s clear you’ve stayed focused. Your career has been built on hard work and persistence. What kept you motivated, especially during the tough early days?
Abel: The vision kept me going. Especially a quote from a mentor of mine, “You are absolutely responsible for the outcome of your life.”
Also, my go-to verse, Proverbs 22:29, paraphrased in my words, “Diligence will put me before kings.”
That’s more than enough to keep me focused. I believe the future I want is within my hands, and no obstacle is big enough to stop me if I stay the course.
CA: Interesting insight, how has your background and experience shaped how you approach AI integration and cybersecurity today?
Abel: Honestly, it has shaped not just my work in AI and Cybersecurity, but also who I am as a person.
I was raised in a disciplined household, with a model of integrity in my father, Col. JTA Dawha [Rtd]. And to really advance in these fields, you need integrity.
Because it’s a core value I grew up with, it has helped me handle AI and Cybersecurity matters with sincerity and ethics.
CA: That foundation really shines through. You’ve become a role model for newcomers in AI and cybersecurity. How does it feel knowing your work is helping guide the next generation?
Abel: It feels really encouraging to know that someone like me is seen as a role model. It makes me want to keep adding value, give my best in all I do, and stay consistent so others can be inspired too.
CA: That kind of impact is powerful. You’ve built a respected voice in communities like ForbesBLK and Black in AI, and also got recognized by Crest Africa. What motivated you to share your knowledge and experience through speaking and writing?
Abel: I’ve always been someone who wants his voice to be heard. Not because I’m loud, actually, I’m quite reserved, but I want to stand out, be noticed, and add value, no matter how little.
CA: Love that. What’s next for you and CFE Consultancy Services? Are there any exciting projects or milestones coming up?
Abel: Well, CFE is still a new player in the AI and Cybersecurity space. We officially launched in January 2025, and from the start, I’ve always asked, “When people hear CFE, what should come to mind?”
Right now, we’re focused on branding, we want to be seen as solution providers and become a household name. We’re working on exciting collaborations and partnerships, so stay tuned, there’s a lot coming!
CA: Good to know. What’s one common misconception about AI integration or cybersecurity strategy that you’d like to correct?
Abel: A big one is the idea that you need a computer science degree or IT background to enter these fields.
The truth is, most successful professionals in AI and cybersecurity didn’t start out in tech. Many came from diverse backgrounds, psychology, law, liberal arts, you name it. So don’t let your degree stop you, these fields are open to anyone willing to learn and grow.

CA: Great advice. Finally, if you could give just one piece of advice to someone looking to make an impact in AI or cybersecurity, what would it be?
Abel: Don’t hide your voice. Share what you learn, even if it feels small. Put it out there.
People are watching, even if they don’t say anything. So be a critical thinker and a problem-solver, that’s how you create value that truly lasts.
