Mikail T. Aliyu, a renowned public health expert, has been instrumental in advancing healthcare access for women across Nigeria. His work, in collaboration with the Nigerian government, has played a pivotal role in revolutionizing reproductive healthcare, particularly for women in rural areas.
In 2020, the Nigerian government launched a groundbreaking initiative to distribute a self-injectable contraceptive nationwide, empowering women to take control of their reproductive health. The project, which was initiated before the COVID-19 pandemic, became even more crucial as the pandemic strained healthcare systems globally. During this time, the contraceptive gave women, particularly those in remote areas, the ability to manage their reproductive health privately and safely from home, reducing their dependence on overcrowded clinics.
Mikail, who led the Technical Support Unit for the project, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, emphasized the importance of the initiative. “We wanted to create a sustainable system where women could access healthcare on their own terms,” he explained. The introduction of self-injectable contraceptives was a significant step toward this goal. Not only did it offer greater convenience and autonomy, but it also became a lifeline during the pandemic, which left many women without access to traditional healthcare facilities.
The Nigerian government collaborated closely with local health workers to ensure that proper training and resources were made available nationwide. Reflecting on the initiative’s impact, Mikail noted, “This wasn’t just ordinary family planning. Family planning has come a long way, but this was different.
