Azumah Resources Ghana Limited has started full-scale construction of its Black Volta Gold Mine in Ghana’s Upper West Region, following a long period of exploration, preparation, and recent setbacks.
The company, which is backed by both local and foreign investors, confirmed that it secured funding from its existing shareholders and has begun preparatory work at the Kalsegra site.
Azumah is now advancing with infrastructure and civil works to lay the foundation for its mining operations.
The company is working closely with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Minerals Commission, and other regulatory bodies to meet all project requirements.
Professor Prince Ofori Amponsah, who leads Azumah’s operations in Ghana, described this transition into construction as “a significant milestone after years of exploration.”

Ghana and China Trade Blame as Tensions Rise Over Illegal Gold Mining Crisis
According to Business Insider, the project is set to generate over 1,000 jobs during construction, with additional permanent positions once mining operations begin.
The roles will range from logistics and catering to power generation and agriculture.
Azumah had initially planned to launch construction in July 2024, but the timeline was pushed back due to legal disputes and unresolved obligations with its previous contractor, Engineers & Planners Co. Ltd., over delays in delivering civil works.
Project Director Rob Ciccini explained that failure to meet these obligations led to legal action and arbitration, after which Azumah ended its contract with the company and decided to move forward on its own.
Ciccini noted that despite the challenges, the project has made meaningful progress thanks to the ongoing backing of its shareholders.
The company has not revealed the total value of the investment or the expected gold output.
However, Ciccini emphasized that the focus remains on creating sustainable livelihoods and promoting responsible mining practices in partnership with local communities.
Azumah also expressed gratitude for the support of the Environmental Protection Authority, the Minerals Commission, and traditional leaders.
A formal groundbreaking ceremony will be announced in collaboration with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.
