The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Friday and Monday as public holidays to mark the Easter celebration, in observance of Good Friday and Easter Monday.
The declaration, typically made by the Minister of Interior on behalf of the government, is in line with the Christian calendar, where Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, while Easter Monday marks the continuation of the Easter celebration.

For 2026, Good Friday falls on April 3, while Easter Monday is observed on April 6, both recognised as nationwide public holidays across Nigeria.
The public holidays will allow Christians across the country to participate fully in religious activities associated with the Easter period, while also providing a long weekend for workers in both public and private sectors.
The Federal Government traditionally uses the period to urge citizens to reflect on values such as sacrifice, love, and national unity, which are central to the Easter message.
