This year marked the 12th edition of the GMYT African Humanitarian Awards, a night that not only celebrated excellence but also highlighted the importance of social impact.

In an exclusive interview, Princess Kelechi Oghene shares her journey, the significance of GAHAwards, and what lies ahead for GMYT Group.

Crest Africa: Kelechi, it’s such an honor to sit down with you. The GMYT African Humanitarian Awards just concluded its 12th edition. Looking back, how does it feel to see the event grow over the years?

Kelechi Oghene: Thank you so much for having me. Reflecting on the journey of GAHAwards, I feel an overwhelming sense of pride and gratitude.

It’s been an incredible experience watching the event evolve from its inception into what it is today. Every year, we strive to make it more impactful and to celebrate individuals who truly embody excellence in their fields.

The event has become a significant platform for honoring those who are driving change in Africa, and I’m proud of what we’ve achieved.

Crest Africa: This year’s theme was “Celebrating Excellence and Innovation.” Can you tell us why you chose this particular theme for 2024?

Kelechi Oghene: Excellence and innovation are values that resonate deeply with me.

The world is constantly evolving, and we must remain adaptable, pushing boundaries to achieve greatness. I believe that excellence should always be pursued in everything we do, whether in fashion, education, or philanthropy.

Innovation is what drives progress, and as we recognize the outstanding individuals at GAHAwards, we want to celebrate those who are not only exceptional in their fields but who also lead the way with fresh ideas and forward-thinking approaches.

Crest Africa: Speaking of innovation, you’ve had an incredible impact in the fashion industry. You’ve created a platform with GMYT Fashion, GMYT Fashion Academy, and even authored a book, Advanced Pattern Cutting. What inspires you to keep pushing the boundaries of fashion education and creativity?

Kelechi Oghene: For me, fashion is more than just clothing—it’s a powerful form of self-expression.

Over the years, I’ve been driven by the desire to inspire and empower others. GMYT Fashion Academy, in particular, is close to my heart because it provides aspiring designers with the tools they need to succeed.

Fashion is an art, and like any art form, it requires both creativity and technical skill. My book, Advanced Pattern Cutting, was a natural extension of my passion for educating the next generation.

I want to share the knowledge I’ve accumulated so that others can stand on my shoulders and create new forms of beauty and innovation in the industry.

Crest Africa: You’ve been a catalyst for many initiatives that empower others. Tell us more about the GMYT Foundation and its role in giving back to the community.

Kelechi Oghene: The GMYT Foundation was born out of my belief that we have a responsibility to uplift others. It focuses on providing educational opportunities, supporting women, and addressing social issues that are close to my heart.

Whether it’s offering scholarships, supporting underprivileged communities, or empowering women to start their businesses, the foundation strives to create lasting change.

We work with partners and volunteers to ensure that the impact we make is sustainable and truly transformative.

Crest Africa: The GAHAwards also celebrates individuals in categories like Humanitarian of the Year, Entrepreneurial Excellence, and Cultural Heritage Advocate. How do you select the winners, and what makes an individual stand out to you?

Kelechi Oghene: Our selection process is rooted in a deep commitment to integrity and excellence.

We look for individuals who have made a tangible impact in their communities or industries—those who go above and beyond, using their influence for the greater good.

It’s not just about what they’ve achieved, but how they’ve done it. We admire people who are not only successful but also selfless in their pursuit of making the world a better place.

Crest Africa: Looking ahead, what’s next for GMYT Group? Do you have any exciting new projects or goals for the future?

Kelechi Oghene: Absolutely! We have a lot in the pipeline. We’re continuously exploring ways to expand GMYT Fashion and Fashion Academy, and we have plans to create more impact-driven initiatives through the GMYT Foundation.

One of our upcoming projects is a new mentorship program aimed at connecting young fashion designers with industry leaders to help them navigate their careers.

We’re also working on a global expansion for GAHAwards, with the aim of reaching more African countries and shining a spotlight on even more remarkable individuals.

Crest Africa: Lastly, Kelechi, if you could leave a message for aspiring entrepreneurs and change-makers, what would it be?

Kelechi Oghene: My message would be simple: never underestimate the power of passion, persistence, and purpose. The journey will not always be easy, but stay true to your vision and keep pushing forward.

Remember, it’s not just about achieving success for yourself—it’s about how you can use your success to uplift others and make a meaningful difference. Keep learning, stay humble, and never stop innovating.
