Breaking the Silence: The Entrepreneur on a Mission to Make Therapy Normal in Nigeria

Akinosho Samson is quietly leading a revolution, one that could reshape the way Nigerians approach mental health for generations to come.

As the founder of Laomai Counseling, Sam has made it his life’s mission to challenge the stigma around therapy and open doors for millions who have learned to live with trauma in silence.

Right now, in June 2025, Sam’s journey into mental health advocacy is reaching more people than ever.

His commitment to breaking through cultural barriers is inspiring new conversations across the country.

“I had to look inward first and ask what I really wanted out of life,” Sam says.

“Through that process, I realized I wanted to help others, not just by listening but by helping them find real healing.”

He started his work as a compassionate listener through “Samcanhelp,” and, over time, built Laomai Counseling into a resource that offers real solutions.

The evolution of his work was not only about building a service, but about changing a mindset.

He sees a silent epidemic across Nigeria, a culture where pain and suffering are minimized with phrases like “God forbid” or “It is well.”

“We’ve been conditioned to believe suffering is normal and asking for help is weakness,” Sam notes.

“But when you dig deeper, you see how this thinking holds us back as individuals and as a country.”

Every day, Sam confronts the challenges of stigma and misunderstanding.

“The biggest obstacle is that people associate therapy with shame, or think it’s something only for those who are ‘broken’,” he explains.

“Often, the first response to hardship is to seek spiritual deliverance, but sometimes the pattern repeats until you face it head-on.”

For Sam, making therapy accessible and accepted means not just offering services, but advocating for a cultural shift.

Alongside Laomai Counseling, Sam runs Cogent Media, a company focused on empowering small businesses through technology. Despite the different industries, he finds a common thread.

“What I’m most proud of is being able to manage both my tech and therapy ventures without putting them in separate boxes,” he says.

“Whether you’re building a business or healing from trauma, the real work is in growing stronger, together.”

Sam is also a published author, with his first book, “What Life Couldn’t Kill,” on the way.

The stories and lessons he shares are rooted in his encounters with everyday Nigerians who have endured, survived, and, in many cases, overcome extraordinary odds.

“We carry trauma like a trophy,” Sam reflects. “But the real badge of honor is in having the courage to heal and move forward.”

Looking ahead, Sam hopes his advocacy will inspire other professionals to do the same.

“If there’s one thing I would say to my colleagues, it’s that we have a responsibility to make therapy the norm in our society and protect our field from further stigma,” he emphasizes. “Let’s make help accessible, and let’s help each other heal.”

Beyond his businesses and advocacy, Sam is steadily building a vibrant community on Instagram at @that.blessed.sam, where he shares content that bridges therapy, faith, and everyday life.

It’s a safe space for honest conversations, practical advice, and finding balance in the realities of modern living.

With unwavering dedication, Akinosho Samson is breaking the silence, one conversation at a time, determined to make therapy an ordinary, empowering part of life for every Nigerian.
