AI to Help Nigerian Farmers Boost Crop Yields and Cut Losses, Expert Says

Chioma Okoro, Chief Operating Officer of Wootlab Innovations, has highlighted the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Nigeria’s agricultural sector, revealing how it can significantly increase farm yields and reduce losses.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, Okoro explained that multimodal AI, technology that integrates data from multiple sources, enables farmers to make informed decisions about what to plant, when to plant, when to apply fertilizer, and when to harvest.

“A tech expert, Chioma Okoro, says that Artificial Intelligence (AI) can help farmers get greater yields and mitigate losses,” the report stated.

She emphasized that although AI has yet to reach its full potential, it is already driving change across agriculture and other industries. AI-powered tools such as soil yield maps and performance analytics are increasingly helping farmers monitor their fields in real time and plan more efficiently.

By replacing guesswork with data-driven insights, AI equips farmers to make smarter decisions, improving efficiency and increasing productivity.

Okoro also underscored how digital technology can promote transparency, fairness, and effectiveness in agriculture. She pointed out that in developed countries, investment in digital farming technologies has spurred innovation and improved outcomes.

Okoro further noted AI’s capacity to forecast weather patterns, including wind, rainfall, and drought, as well as detect early signs of crop stress from pests or water shortages. These insights give farmers crucial time to take action and reduce potential losses.

She stressed that making such tools accessible to local farmers is vital for boosting productivity and meeting Nigeria’s growing food demand.

In a related development, AI leader Abel Aboh recently urged Nigeria to harness AI’s power to address pressing national challenges, with a particular focus on agriculture as a pathway to food sufficiency.

He called on the government to assemble expert teams dedicated to implementing AI-driven solutions, as reported by Nairametrics.

As Artificial Intelligence continues to evolve, its expanding role presents a unique opportunity for Nigeria to unlock substantial value across critical sectors like agriculture, provided AI systems remain trustworthy, explainable, transparent, and fair.
