Egypt’s petroleum ministry announced on Tuesday that drilling work is in progress on three new wells at the Zohr gas field in the Mediterranean during the current financial year.
The ministry also said that an additional well, Zohr-6, has boosted Egypt’s gas production by about 65 million cubic feet per day.
Italian energy company Eni, the operator of Zohr, resumed drilling at the site in February after reducing activity earlier due to unpaid arrears owed to foreign oil firms, Reuters reported.

Production at Zohr, the largest gas discovery in the Mediterranean, had fallen to 1.9 billion cubic feet per day in early 2024, significantly lower than the field’s peak output in 2019.
Zohr was first discovered by Eni in 2015 and started producing gas in late 2017.
The field is estimated to contain about 30 trillion cubic feet of gas. It is operated by Petrobel, a joint venture between Eni and Egypt’s state-owned Egyptian General Petroleum Corp (EGPC).
