Noella Musunka’s life journey is a testament to resilience, determination, and compassion. Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo to a Cypriot father and a Congolese mother, Noella’s childhood was marked by adversity.
After her father’s sudden passing, she was sent to live with relatives in Europe, with minimal contact with her mother and homeland.
Despite these challenges, Noella persevered, pursuing her education with unwavering determination. She earned a degree in Business Management, laying the foundation for her future endeavors.
In 2007, Noella returned to her homeland and was struck by the poverty and lack of opportunities for women. This experience ignited a vision to empower Congolese girls and their communities through education and health programs. Thus, Malaika, a nonprofit grassroots organization, was born.
Under Noella’s leadership, Malaika has made a profound impact, transforming thousands of lives in the community of Kalebuka and beyond. The organization provides a range of free programs, including:
– A school offering an accredited, holistic curriculum for over 430 girls
– A Community Center providing education, health, and sports programs for over 5,000 youth and adults
– Clean water for over 35,000 people through the construction and refurbishment of 31 wells
– An agriculture program feeding students and staff two meals daily
As a passionate advocate for education, Noella has become one of the leading voices in girls’ education globally. She serves as an Ambassador for The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria.
Noella’s commitment to empowering girls and communities extends beyond her work with Malaika. As an international model, she uses her platform to raise awareness for causes close to her heart, believing that education, health, and opportunity are intrinsic human rights.
A devoted mother of two, Noella is dedicated to raising her children, JJ and Cara, to recognize the value of giving back and empowering others.
Her children actively participate in Malaika’s work, donating their birthdays to the organization and joining Noella in Congo during summer holidays.
Noella Musunka’s remarkable journey is a testament to the power of resilience, compassion, and determination. Her tireless efforts to empower girls and communities have created a lasting impact, inspiring countless individuals to join her in the pursuit of a more equitable and just world.
