Nisha Kanabar stands as a visionary force reshaping how the world sees, experiences, and engages with African fashion. A dynamic entrepreneur, strategist, and storyteller from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, her work bridges culture, creativity, and commerce with an unwavering belief in Africa’s creative power.
Born and raised in Tanzania, Nisha’s journey into the world of fashion and luxury began on the global stage.
After graduating from the prestigious Parsons School of Design in New York with degrees in Design and Management and Fashion Marketing, she built a rich foundation in the editorial and commercial world of fashion.
Her early experiences include roles with iconic industry names such as Vogue India, American Vogue, Saint Laurent, Stella McCartney, and Lalique, where she learned firsthand how storytelling and strategic communication shape cultural perception.
Her global career then took her to Dubai, where she managed commercial partnerships at Condé Nast’s Style.com/Arabia (now Vogue Arabia) and played a key role in launching POPSUGAR Middle East.
There, she helped curate special events and strategic brand activations, including the Style.com/Arabia-DDFC Fashion Prize, an initiative designed to elevate emerging designers.
This blend of editorial insight and commercial strategy gave Nisha a unique lens through which she could view global fashion ecosystems.
When Nisha returned to Dar es Salaam in 2016, she noticed that Africa’s fashion industry was brimming with talent and creativity, yet it lacked infrastructure, representation, and access to broader markets. Instead of stepping back, she stepped forward, determined to change the narrative from within.
Out of this vision, she founded Industrie Africa in 2018, a curated platform that began as a hub for discovering the continent’s most exceptional fashion designers and evolved into a global retail destination combining authenticity with accessibility.
Industrie Africa’s mission was simple yet powerful: to celebrate Africa’s diverse design heritage while connecting it to global audiences hungry for nuance, creativity, and craftsmanship.
Under her leadership, Industrie Africa grew into a respected platform showcasing designers from across the continent and delivering their work to customers worldwide.
The brand did more than sell clothes, it amplified voices, contextualized African style on its own terms, and championed a fashion ecosystem rooted in cultural pride and sustainability.
In 2025, Nisha’s influence in the fashion world was further acknowledged when she was named one of Vogue Business’s 100 Innovators, a global list of founders and creators transforming the industry. This recognition reflected her ongoing impact in shaping how luxury, design, and African identity intersect in contemporary fashion.
Over the years, Nisha’s work has also drawn attention from international cultural institutions. Industrie Africa has been featured in exhibitions that explore African fashion narratives, including being spotlighted by the Victoria & Albert Museum in its Africa Fashion exhibition.
But perhaps what defines Nisha most is her deep commitment to elevating others, not just herself. She has contributed thought leadership to major industry outlets, served as a mentor and judge for fashion events, and worked with global initiatives like the UN’s Ethical Fashion Initiative, guiding emerging designers toward sustainable and equitable growth.
Today, even as the fashion landscape evolves and new chapters unfold, Nisha Kanabar’s work remains rooted in her original mission: to celebrate African artistry with pride, expand opportunity without compromise, and build bridges that honor heritage while unlocking global possibility.
