China Donates CFA1.6B Rice to Togo to Support Food Security

China has delivered 2,525 tons of rice to Togo to support the country’s food security efforts. The shipment, valued at 20 million yuan (about 1.6 billion CFA francs), was officially handed over to Togolese authorities on Thursday, April 2, 2026, in Lomé, according to Togo First.

This marks the second rice shipment China has provided to help Togo address hunger, following an earlier delivery in 2024.

The support is part of commitments made during the 9th Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit held in Beijing in 2024, where China pledged emergency food assistance to African countries.

“The people are the foundation of the state, and food is the people’s most basic necessity,” said Wang Min, China’s ambassador to Togo.

He added that the donation is intended to support Togo’s progress toward achieving Sustainable Development Goal 2, which focuses on ending hunger and ensuring access to safe, nutritious, and sufficient food.

In addition to food aid, China has organised training programmes in tropical agricultural technologies in Togo over the past two years to strengthen local capacity, increase production, and improve agricultural resilience.

Togo also receives rice donations from Japan, including support provided through the Kennedy Round food programme.
