Roye Okupe: Turning African Legends into Global Stories Through Comics and Animation

Roye Okupe, born in Lagos, Nigeria, is an award‑winning filmmaker, author, entrepreneur, and creative visionary whose lifelong passion for comics, animation, and storytelling has redefined how African narratives are told on the global stage.

With a blend of imagination, cultural pride, and business acumen, Roye has built a media empire that centers African heritage in genres traditionally dominated by Western voices.

Roye’s journey began with a profound love for superheroes and animated stories like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Batman, stories that shaped his childhood and ignited his dream to create characters rooted in African culture.

After moving to the United States in 2002 and earning a bachelor’s and master’s degree in computer science from George Washington University, he combined his technical expertise with creative ambition, ultimately founding YouNeek Studios in 2015.

YouNeek Studios began as a platform to publish original graphic novels and comics inspired by African history, mythology, and modern themes.

Through the YouNeek YouNiverse, Roye has produced a growing catalog of stories including E.X.O.: The Legend of Wale Williams, an afro‑futuristic superhero epic set in a future Nigeria, and Malika: Warrior Queen, a historical fantasy rooted in West African lore.

Under Roye’s leadership, YouNeek’s creations garnered widespread recognition. He was named #5 on Ventures Africa’s list of “40 African Innovators to Watch” and featured in NewAfrican Magazine’s 100 Most Influential Africans in both 2016 and 2017.

His dedication to inclusive, culturally rich storytelling earned him a nomination for the Dwayne McDuffie Award for Diversity in Comics in 2021, affirming his commitment to excellence and representation in the industry.

A major milestone for Roye and YouNeek came with a landmark publishing deal with Dark Horse Comics in 2021, initially for ten books and later expanded to include twenty, positioning YouNeek’s stories alongside world‑recognized graphic novel franchises.

The graphic novel Iyanu: Child of Wonder, part of this publishing agreement, tells the inspiring tale of a young orphan in a magical world who must rise against an ancient threat. The series won the Nommo Award for Best Comic in 2022, underscoring its artistic and narrative impact.

Perhaps Roye’s most globally visible achievement to date is the adaptation of Iyanu: Child of Wonder into an animated series produced by Lion Forge Entertainment.

Premiering on major platforms including Cartoon Network and Max in 2025, the series quickly rose to the top of children’s programming charts, a historic moment for African storytelling in mainstream media.

Beyond publishing and animation, Roye has secured a first‑look development deal with Lion Forge to adapt more of YouNeek’s rich intellectual property into television, film, and gaming, signaling his broader ambition to build an interconnected, multimedia Afro‑futuristic universe that resonates with audiences worldwide.

Roye Okupe stands as a pioneering figure in African creative entrepreneurship, proving that stories rooted in African culture can captivate global audiences and stand confidently alongside the world’s most beloved fantasy and superhero narratives.
