2026 Budget: See top 10 road projects getting massive funding

Nigeria’s road sector has been prioritised in the 2026 Appropriation Bill, with billions of naira earmarked for strategic highway construction, dualisation, bypasses, and rehabilitation across key regional corridors.

These investments aim to boost economic activity, improve connectivity, and facilitate the movement of goods and people nationwide especially given the heavy reliance of Nigerians on road transportation for commerce and daily travel.

In the N58.18 trillion 2026 budget, an estimated N6.08 trillion is set aside for capital expenditure, with the Federal Ministry of Works receiving one of the largest single allocations about N3.49 trillion to advance road projects across the country.

Here are the Top 10 road projects with the largest funding allocations in the 2026 budget:

10. Dualisation of Kano–Maiduguri Road, Section I – N13.3 billion
This allocation supports ongoing dualisation works on the Kano to Maiduguri corridor, improving connectivity across northern states and reducing travel time for commerce and regional linkages.

9. Wusasa–Jos Federal Road (Turunku–Mararaban Jos) – N14.0 billion
Funding for upgrading this federal corridor enhances connectivity between key urban centres in the North-Central region.

8. Construction of Kano Northern Bypass Road – N14 billion
This will ease traffic flow around Kano, one of Nigeria’s largest commercial hubs.

7. Construction & Rehabilitation of Enugu–Abakaliki Road – N14.7 billion
Investments here aim to improve travel times and safety along a key Southeast route.

6. Construction of Maiduguri Bypass Road – N17.5 billion
This bypass supports more efficient freight and passenger movement around Maiduguri, enhancing logistics in the Northeast.

5. Lafia Bypass & 9th Mile–Otukpo–Makurdi Road – N23.8 billion
Critical for Mid-North connectivity, this project links major trade hubs and agricultural markets.

4. Dualisation of Kano–Katsina Road, Phase I – N23.8 billion
Phase I of this project improves one of the principal links between Kano and Katsina states.

3. Dualisation of Kano–Katsina Road, Phase II – N52.5 billion
Phase II continues the expansion and upgrading work on this major Northwest corridor.

2. Makurdi–9th Mile Road (China Harbour counterpart funding) – N157.0 billion
A significant federal project leveraging counterpart support to accelerate delivery of this strategic transportation link. 🏆

1. Lafia Road & 9th Mile–Otukpo–Makurdi Dualisation (Keffi Phase II) – N367.9 billion
The top-funded road initiative in the budget, this project will greatly enhance the central trade corridor, improving transportation efficiency between major northern and central markets.

Why it matters:
The heavy investment in these corridors reflects the government’s broader agenda to improve national road infrastructure as a backbone for economic growth, regional integration, and reduction of transit costs across Nigeria’s vast landscape.
