Togo Accounts for 29.5% of UEMOA Transport Revenue in 2024

Togo captured 29.5% of all transport service revenue generated within the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) in 2024, claiming nearly a third of the region’s total.

This is according to the latest foreign trade report from the Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO). Côte d’Ivoire ranked next with 26.7% of transport revenue, TogoFirst reported.

Transport services, covering road, maritime, and air activities, remain a central pillar of the Union’s service trade. However, the sector’s share of total service exports fell to 19.4% in 2024, down from 21.6% in 2023.

The decline stemmed from weaker demand and reduced earnings, which dropped from 670.3 billion XOF to 627.1 billion XOF ($1.02 billion).

Togo’s strong performance is attributed largely to the strategic importance of the Autonomous Port of Lomé, a major maritime gateway for the sub-region.

The port supports international transit and logistics for several landlocked countries, including Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali. Land and sea transport activities continue to make up the bulk of revenue, driven by robust port operations.

Transport services remain the second-largest contributor to the Union’s service exports, trailing only tourism, which holds a 36.1% share.

BCEAO data shows that Togo’s transport service exports reached 185.1 billion XOF ($301.7 million) in 2024.

This figure reflects consistent growth between 2020 and 2024, increasing by nearly 77% from 104.4 billion XOF over five years. Growth, however, slowed between 2023 and 2024, rising by just 0.7 billion XOF.
