Speaking from Belem, Brazil, where he is attending the COP30 conference, Yoko said the proposed initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to make the country’s debt more sustainable.
He explained that the government is in talks with “partners” capable of providing credit “enhancements,” though the potential size of the swap has not yet been determined.
Yoko noted that the idea of a debt-for-nature swap “resonates clearly” for the Congo Republic, given its role within the Congo Basin, a region spanning six countries and home to the world’s second-largest tropical rainforest.
