TikTok is expanding its comment section with four new features that will allow users to interact with videos through voice messages, polls, photo carousels and Live Photos.
According to USA TODAY, TikTok announced the changes on September 3 as part of an update to how users and creators communicate within video comment sections.
Users can already leave text, individual photos and GIFs in comments. The latest additions broaden those options and make comment sections more interactive.
Two of the features — comment polls and Live Photo comments — are already available globally, while voice comments and photo carousel comments are expected to roll out worldwide over the next month.

With voice comments, users will be able to record and post audio messages of up to 60 seconds beneath videos. The feature will be limited to users aged 18 and above.
TikTok is also introducing comment polls, giving creators the ability to place polls directly within their video comments. Followers can vote among as many as five options, while creators can determine how long each poll remains open. Results will be displayed within the comments.
The photo carousel feature will allow users to include as many as nine photos in a single comment, expanding the existing option to post individual images.
Users will also be able to share Live Photos directly from their camera rolls through the new Live Photo comments feature.
The rollout gives TikTok users more ways to participate in conversations without relying only on written responses. For creators, particularly those managing large communities, polls and richer media comments could also provide new ways to gather audience responses and continue conversations beneath their videos.
The changes arrive as TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance, remain under scrutiny in the United States. In August, the companies agreed to pay $400 million to resolve U.S. Justice Department allegations concerning children’s online privacy.
For TikTok users, however, the immediate change will be visible directly within comment sections as the remaining features become available globally.

The update could be particularly relevant to Africa’s growing community of TikTok creators, businesses and audiences that use the platform for entertainment, storytelling and digital engagement.
Voice comments could make interactions more conversational, while polls give creators a simple way to gather feedback directly from followers. Photo carousels could also allow audiences to contribute more visual context to discussions without leaving the comment section.
Because TikTok says the features are being made available globally, African users are included in the rollout. Comment polls and Live Photo comments are already available worldwide, while voice comments and photo carousels are expected to follow over the next month.
For African creators, the changes ultimately mean more formats for turning viewers into active participants in the conversations surrounding their content.
