Born on March 18, 1965, in Dobsonville, Soweto, South Africa, Yvonne Ntombizodwa Machaka grew up facing the harsh realities of apartheid-era South Africa.
Her father passed away when she was 11, leaving her mother, a domestic worker, to raise three daughters on a meager income. Despite these challenges, Yvonne discovered her passion for music at a young age, using it as both a form of expression and a vehicle for change.
Her career took off in 1984 at age 19 when she was discovered by Phil Hollis of Dephon Records. Her debut album, I’m in Love With a DJ, quickly catapulted her into stardom.
Songs such as I’m Burning Up, Thank You Mr. DJ, I Cry for Freedom, Motherland, and the iconic Umqombothi not only made her a household name but also cemented her as a voice of hope and unity across Africa. Umqombothi even featured in the opening scene of the 2004 film Hotel Rwanda, highlighting her influence beyond music.
Yvonne Chaka Chaka’s impact extends far beyond entertainment. She has performed alongside global icons including Bono, Angélique Kidjo, Annie Lennox, Youssou N’Dour, Queen, and South African legends like Miriam Makeba and Hugh Masekela.
She has also performed for world leaders, including Queen Elizabeth II, former U.S. President Bill Clinton, and former South African President Thabo Mbeki. Her presence on the international stage underscores her role as a cultural ambassador for Africa.
Equally dedicated to humanitarian work, Yvonne serves as a champion for The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, a United Nations MDG Envoy for Africa, and Goodwill Ambassador for the Roll Back Malaria Partnership.
Nelson Mandela personally chose her as the first ambassador for his children’s fund. She also founded the Princess of Africa Foundation, using her influence to advance education, health, and women’s empowerment across the continent.
Yvonne’s dedication has earned her numerous accolades, including the World Economic Forum’s Crystal Award, recognition as one of the Top 100 Most Influential Women in the World, and multiple Global Good Awards.
